Is Pres. Obama’s healthcare plan going to hurt middle class Americans more than help?

A family of four headed by a 45-year-old making $63,000 a year is in the middle of the middle class. But that family would pay $7,110 to buy its own health insurance under the plan from the committee chairman, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont.

The family would get a tax credit of $3,970 to help pay for a policy worth $11,080. But the balance due — $7,110 — is real money. Maybe it’s less than the rent, but it’s probably more than a car loan payment.

Kaiser’s calculator doesn’t take into account co-payments and deductibles that could add hundreds of dollars, even several thousand, to a family’s total medical expenses. A Congressional Budget Office analysis estimates total expenses could average 20 percent of income for some families by 2016.

Sure, but you have to take into consideration why that family cannot get insurance through the head of household’s employer, and how much traditional private insurance would cost.

EDIT: you know what’s funny about that calculator you posted, there is a part which tells you if you could potentially pay less for a less comprehensive plan. But I guess you didn’t see that.

And I guess you also missed where it says, “In general, full-time employees with employer coverage available that meets specified requirements are not eligible for premium subsidies, unless the employee would have to pay more than 10% of income for the employer-provided coverage. ”

So for your scenario the person would have to be making 63K per year WITHOUT getting insurance offered to them by their employer.

30 years of Republican economic policies have hurt the middle class. The middle class really needs a single payer system. That would make health care cheaper for everyone and improve our nation’s health. It would make it MUCH easier to start a business, since you wouldn’t have to worry about finding health insurance for yourself or your employees. It would make American manufacturers MUCH more competitive with foreign companies, since all the foreign nations we compete with have national health care systems and their corporations don’t have to pay a dime for their employees, which means they can undercut us on cost. But of course single payer won’t happen any time soon, and nothing in any of the proposed plans will do anything for the middle class. They just give billions in corporate welfare to insurance companies.

The biggest problem with the Democrats and their so called health plan is that they are owned by the trial lawyers. Until there is significant tort reform the idea of affordable health insurance will never become a reality. This is the reality that Democrats do not want the American people to know.

It’s just another method of making reparations to all the folks who won’t work. He wants to take money from the working class and give it to the do-nothings. Impeach him today!

The reason the policy is worth $11,080 is because that is the average cost of medicare for such a family which is why most people buy insurance without being made to do it. The extra $3970 will help the family you describe pay for it. The subsidies for the half of all families who earn less will be larger so they will be helped more.
